About: not a training company

Built for builders, by builders.

The people who made this build homes in BC and were tired of expensive courses scheduled around someone else’s calendar. So it’s on demand, one price, and the records are the kind an auditor accepts.

Why this exists

Every general contractor licence in BC needs 20 CPD points a year. There are 6,000+ licensed residential builders in good standing, and 500 to 700 licences come up for renewal every month. Most of those builders run small crews and spend their days on site. Sitting in a hotel ballroom for a webinar that costs a day of production is not how they want to meet the requirement, and paying $700 to $1,850 for 20 points is not how they want to spend the money.

Builder Pass is the version the people behind it wanted for their own licences: every point in one pass, courses you can watch between site visits on whatever device is handy, and a certificate that already has every field BC Housing asks for.

How courses are built

  • BC first. Every course is written for British Columbia, against the current BC Building Code, BC statutes and BC Housing rules. Worked examples are Part 9 houses, suites and townhouses, not high-rises.
  • Reviewed before it goes live. Every course is reviewed by a working BC builder or a named industry professional (a construction lawyer, an energy advisor, a building official or a warranty provider, depending on the topic). Items the reviewer cannot confirm against a primary source are cut, not published.
  • Refreshed when the rules change. Each course has a refresh trigger, such as a code amendment or a statute coming into force. A refresh is a new version, and BC Housing lets you claim a substantially changed course again.
  • Honest about what the points are. Our points are informal, 1 per hour of instruction, under BC Housing’s CPD rules. We do not claim formal credit and we do not claim BC Housing endorsement. See formal vs informal CPD.

How completion is verified

BC Housing can audit any licensee’s CPD. Our records are built so you pass that audit without a scramble. Seat time is tracked while the video is playing; skipping ahead is refused; each segment ends with a checkpoint you must attempt. When every segment is done, an immutable completion record is issued and stored for as long as you need it. See what a CPD audit asks for.

What we are not

Builder Pass is an independent training provider. We are not BC Housing, we do not issue or renew licences, and we do not report your CPD for you. You report it in the LRB portal; we give you the fields. The rules themselves are on BC Housing’s CPD page.

Who runs it

Builder Pass is operated by PR West Developments Inc. dba Builder Pass, Squamish, British Columbia. The people behind it build homes in BC. We do not publish individual names, photos or licence numbers. Questions, corrections and course suggestions go to hello@builderpass.ca, or use the contact page. If you are a BC professional who would like to review a course in your field, say so; reviewers are named on the course.
