Renewing a BC general contractor licence costs $500 a year, happens in the LRB portal inside a 60-day window before expiry, and requires 20 CPD points completed and reported for the term first. There is no grace period. Most renewals that get held up are held up by CPD that is short or unreported, a warranty provider confirmation that is missing, or company details that no longer match the registry.

Timing: the 60-day window
BC Housing opens renewal 60 days before your licence expires. That is also roughly when 500 to 700 other BC licences are coming up in the same month, so do not expect same-day answers to a support ticket in the last week. The sensible timeline for a licence expiring on the 30th of a month:
- 90 days out: check the CPD total in the portal. If it is short, buy the training now.
- 60 days out: window opens. Confirm warranty provider and company details are current.
- 30 days out: all 20 points reported. Submit the renewal and pay the $500.
- Expiry date: renewal already approved. Nothing to do.
Builder Pass emails reminders at 90, 60 and 30 days before the expiry date on file, which is the schedule above.
CPD: the usual blocker
The renewal cannot go through with fewer than 20 points reported for the term. The three ways builders get stuck:
- Points completed but not entered. Certificates in a drawer do not count. Enter each activity in the portal; see how to report CPD in the LRB portal.
- Points short with no time left. Live webinars run on their schedule, not yours. If you are inside the window and short, on-demand training is the only option that finishes this week. The pass covers the full 20 and can be done in a few evenings.
- Points that will not hold up. A course claimed in a previous term, formal points claimed for an informal course, or training the nominee did not personally complete. These may pass the portal and fail the audit. See formal vs informal CPD.
Warranty provider confirmation
A licensed builder must have an arrangement with a home warranty insurance provider to build new homes. At renewal BC Housing confirms that arrangement is in place. If you changed providers during the year, or your provider has put you on hold over a claims history or a financial review, sort that out before the window opens. A renewal waiting on the warranty provider is out of your hands.
Company and nominee details
The licence is tied to the registered company and the people behind it. Changes in directors, officers, shareholders, the CPD nominee, the company name or the registered address should be reported as they happen, and all have to be current at renewal. A mismatch between the BC corporate registry and the LRB record is a common reason a renewal is sent back. If your nominee changed mid-term, read the nominee guide first; the carry-over rules depend on it.
Common reasons a renewal is held up
- Fewer than 20 CPD points reported for the term
- CPD reported for the wrong person (not the nominee)
- A course claimed again that was already claimed in an earlier term
- Warranty provider arrangement not confirmed
- Director, owner or nominee changes not reported
- Outstanding fees or an unresolved compliance matter
- Renewal started inside the last few days and a document request not answered before expiry
What a clean renewal looks like
Log in to the portal at 60 days with 20 or more points already showing. Confirm the nominee, directors and address. Confirm the warranty provider. Pay the $500. Save the confirmation in the same folder as the term’s CPD certificates, because an audit of that term can arrive up to three years later. Total time, about twenty minutes, if the points were done early.
If the licence lapses
There is no grace period. Past the expiry date, the licence is not in good standing: you cannot start a new home under it, your warranty provider will not enrol a new unit, and a municipality will not issue a building permit that needs a licensed builder. Getting back may require a new application rather than a renewal, with the time and fees that come with it. Every year some builders lose weeks of production over a $500 fee and 20 points they could have finished in a weekend.
The short version
Do the CPD early in the term, keep the certificates, report as you go, and renew at 30 days out with everything already showing. Twenty-six points in one purchase, with a record per course and reminders on the schedule above: get my 20 points.
