How to report CPD points in the BC Housing LRB portal

Last updated October 2026BC onlyEducation, not legal advice

You report CPD in BC Housing’s Licensed Residential Builder (LRB) portal: log in, open your licence, go to the CPD section, add one activity per course with its title, provider, date, hours, learning method and competency, and submit it before you renew. The 20 points have to be completed inside the licence term and entered before the renewal goes in, and the renewal window is 60 days before expiry with no grace period after.

Before you start

Have three things in front of you: your LRB portal login, the name of your licence’s CPD nominee (the points go against that person), and the completion record for each course. If a record is missing any of the fields below, get it from the provider before you enter the activity. Guessing a date or an hour count is how reported points stop matching the certificate, and that is what an audit looks for.

The fields the portal asks for

FieldWhat to enterWhere it comes from
Course or activity titleExactly as printed on the certificateCertificate
ProviderThe organization that delivered itCertificate
Completion dateThe date on the certificate, inside the licence termCertificate
Hours of instructionInstruction time, not including breaks or self-studyCertificate
Learning methodOnline, in person, in-house, conference, and so onCertificate or your notes
CompetencyOne of the seven core competencies or business ethicsCertificate or course description
Formal or informalInformal unless the provider is an accredited institution or named associationProvider
Points claimedHours × 1 (informal) or hours × 2 (formal)Calculated

A Builder Pass completion record prints all of these in the same order, including the competency as BC Housing labels it, so the entry is a copy job. Other providers vary; a webinar confirmation email often has the title and date but not the hours or the competency, and you will have to work those out from the agenda.

Step by step

  1. Log in to the LRB portal. It is linked from BC Housing’s builder licensing pages. Use the account that holds the licence, not a personal account.
  2. Open the licence and find CPD. The CPD section shows the current term, the nominee, the points reported so far and any carry-over from last term.
  3. Add an activity. One entry per course. Enter the fields from the table above. Where the portal offers a list of providers or competencies, pick the closest match rather than typing a new one.
  4. Check the points. A 2-hour informal course is 2 points. If the portal shows something else, the hours or the formal/informal flag is wrong.
  5. Save and repeat until the term shows at least 20 points. Enter courses as you finish them; a dozen entries the night before expiry is where mistakes happen.
  6. Renew. Once 20 points show for the term, the renewal can go through. Pay the $500 licence fee and confirm your warranty provider and company details.

The deadline, precisely

Two dates matter. The completion date of each course has to fall inside the licence term; a course finished the day after expiry belongs to the next term. The reporting date has to be before you submit the renewal. The renewal window opens 60 days before expiry. There is no grace period: a licence that is not renewed by the expiry date is not in good standing, and you cannot start a new home under it. Treat 30 days before expiry as your own deadline for having the points in the portal, which leaves time to chase a missing certificate. The renewal guide covers the rest of the process.

Common entry mistakes

  • Claiming the whole conference as one activity. Points are for instruction time. A full-day event with four sessions is four entries, or one entry with the actual instruction hours, not eight hours for being in the building.
  • Claiming formal points for online training. Unless the provider is an accredited post-secondary institution or an association BC Housing names, it is informal at 1 point per hour.
  • Re-claiming a course from last term. Points for a course can be claimed once unless it substantially changed. The portal may not stop you; an audit will.
  • Entering a course the nominee did not personally complete. The nominee earns the points. A certificate in a different employee’s name does not count toward the licence.
  • Rounding hours up. A 50-minute webinar is not an hour. Enter the instruction time on the certificate.

After you report

Reporting is not the end of the record. BC Housing audits up to 3% of licensees a year and gives 30 days to produce the certificates behind the points. Keep every certificate for three years after the end of the term, in one folder, named by term. Builder Pass keeps yours in your account and produces the whole term as one PDF on request, which is what the audit asks for. Details in what a CPD audit asks for.

If you would rather not assemble 20 points from a dozen sources, the pass is 26 points with a matching record for each course: get your 20 points.

Questions builders ask

Where do I report CPD points to BC Housing?

In the Licensed Residential Builder (LRB) portal, the same online account you use to renew your licence. CPD is entered as individual activities under your licence's CPD nominee, each with the course details and the points claimed.

What is the deadline for reporting CPD?

Before you renew. The 20 points must be completed in the licence term and entered in the portal before the renewal is submitted. Renewal opens 60 days before expiry and there is no grace period after it.

Do I upload my certificates?

You enter the details of each activity in the portal and keep the certificate. BC Housing can ask for the certificate in an audit, so file it where you can find it for three years after the term ends.

Does Builder Pass report the points for me?

No. Licensees report their own CPD. Builder Pass gives you a completion record with every field the portal asks for, so each entry takes about a minute.

What if I entered something wrong?

Fix it before renewal if the portal allows an edit; otherwise contact BC Housing's licensing team. Do not leave a wrong entry in place, because an audit compares what you reported against the record you hold.
