Included with every pass

Ask the Code. Your AI Building Code assistant.

Ask a BC Building Code 2024 question in plain words. You get the section number, a plain-language pointer and a link to the Province's free online Code. It does not quote the Code and it is not your building official.

Ask the Code · AI assistantBC Building Code 2024
What is the minimum headroom over a stair in a house?
9.8.2.1Part 9, Stairs, Ramps, Handrails and Guards

Part 9 sets a minimum clear height over every stair, measured above the line of the nosings, and which figure applies depends on where the stair is. The figures and the way they are measured are in Sentence 9.8.2.1.

The tutor points you to the section and the Province’s free online Code. It does not quote the Code. Check the current Code text and your building official.

  • Plain-language pointer to the section
  • Link to the Province's free online Code
  • Included with every pass, no extra cost

How it works

Three steps. The section number is the point; the reading is still yours.

  1. Step 1: Ask in plain words.

Type the question the way you would ask it on site: headroom over a stair, when a wall needs a rainscreen, whether a slab needs a radon rough-in. No section numbers needed.

  2. Step 2: Get the section and a pointer.

The answer names the BC Building Code 2024 section that applies and says in plain language what it covers. It is built on the Part 9 index of headings and the public BC Housing guides, so it points, it does not quote.

  3. Step 3: Read the text, check with your official.

Every answer links to the Province's free online Code and ends with the same line: check the current Code text and your building official. The section number gets you to the right page in seconds.

The 2024 BC Codes are free to read on the Province’s website.

What it is not

Four things Ask the Code will not do, on purpose.

Not the Code text
Ask the Code paraphrases and cites. It never reproduces Code wording, which is Crown copyright. The text is free from the Province and one click away.
Not an engineer
Ask it to size a beam, stamp a drawing or sign off a footing and it declines. That is a professional engineer's job, and the tool says so.
Not your building official
A pointer to the section is not a permit decision. Your authority having jurisdiction has the last word, every time.
Not a course
It answers Code questions. The 12 courses in the pass are where the CPD points come from; the assistant is included alongside them.

Questions about Ask the Code

Does Ask the Code cost extra?

No. It is included with every Builder Pass CPD Pass at $299 plus GST, with a limit of 60 questions a day per person.

Which Code does it cover?

The BC Building Code 2024, Part 9 housing and small buildings. Questions outside BC residential construction are declined rather than guessed at.

Does it quote the Code?

No. It points to the section and says in plain language what the section covers, then links to the Province's free online Code so you read the current text yourself.

Can I rely on the answer?

Use it to find the right section fast, then read the section and confirm with your building official. Every answer ends with that line because the Code text and your authority having jurisdiction decide, not the assistant.
