The cheapest CPD points for BC builders: an honest price comparison

Last updated October 2026BC onlyEducation, not legal advice

On published October 2026 prices, the cheapest 20 CPD points for a BC builder are the Builder Pass CPD Pass at $299 plus GST for 26 points, which is $11.50 per point, or $230 per 20 points. An association 20-point package is $356 ($17.80); BC Housing’s own Learning on Demand modules work out to $36 per point; and scheduled webinar bundles run $55 to $105 per point. The table below shows the arithmetic, using published prices from associations and BC Housing only.

Prices as published by each provider in October 2026, before tax. Per-point figures are the package price divided by the points in the package. Where a package is not exactly 20 points, the per-point figure is what to compare. These are the providers’ own numbers; we have not adjusted them, and none of this is a comment on the quality of anyone’s courses. BC Housing’s catalogue pricing is on its Learning Centre.

Why the range is so wide

A factor of eight between the cheapest and the most expensive route to the same 20 points comes down to delivery, not content.

  • Live sessions cost a presenter’s afternoon every time they run. A ten-session webinar pack is ten afternoons of an expert’s time, priced accordingly, and it also costs you ten afternoons on fixed dates.
  • Per-module catalogues price each module separately. $90 for 2.5 points is reasonable for one module; eight modules to reach 20 is where it adds up, and a single-topic catalogue means eight modules on one subject.
  • A pass is produced once and sold many times. That is the whole economics of on-demand. Builder Pass’s price reflects that, and the pass is 26 points, so the per-point figure is $11.50, or $230 per 20 points.

The costs that are not on the invoice

Price per point is the start, not the end. Three other costs decide what 20 points really cost a builder.

  1. Time off site. A live session is typically mid-morning on a weekday. Ten of them is ten half-days. Value your time at what a site visit is worth and the scheduled routes get more expensive fast. On-demand courses are watched in 15 to 20 minute segments whenever you have the gap.
  2. Content you would not otherwise take. Twenty points from one Step Code catalogue is 20 hours of Step Code. If your business needs lien law, warranty response, contracts and financing this year, a single-topic bundle is cheaper than it looks only if you ignore what you did not learn.
  3. Record-keeping. Twenty points from six sources is six certificate formats to collect, file for three years and produce in an audit. One source with one audit pack is one PDF.

Repeatability

BC Housing lets you claim each course once unless it substantially changed, so the price you compare this year is not the price you will pay next year unless the provider has new content. A pass that adds new and updated courses annually keeps its price per point; a fixed catalogue runs out. See the CPD points rule and carry-over for how to use a 26-point pass across two terms.

Formal points change the arithmetic, sometimes

Formal CPD from an accredited institution or a named association earns 2 points per hour, so a $400 ten-hour college course is 20 formal points at $20 per point. That can be good value if the course is one you want, runs on dates you can make and is close to home. It is rarely the cheapest route in money and time for a small builder, and it is never required: 20 informal points meet the rule. Details in formal vs informal CPD.

What you get for $299

  • 12 courses, 26 hours, 26 informal points: all seven core competencies plus business ethics
  • On demand, any device, 15 to 20 minute segments, no exams
  • A completion record per course with every LRB portal field, and a one-click audit pack for the term
  • Renewal reminders at 90, 60 and 30 days before expiry
  • New and updated courses every year, so the pass is never a repeat
  • Full refund within 7 days if you have not completed a course

GST extra, no automatic renewal. Company plans are 15% off for 3 or more seats, which is $254.15 per seat. Pricing detail is on the pricing page; the pass is at get my 20 points.

Questions builders ask

What is the cheapest way to get 20 CPD points in BC?

On published October 2026 prices, the Builder Pass CPD Pass at $299 plus GST for 26 points ($11.50 per point, which is $230 per 20 points) is the lowest-cost route per point among the options listed here. The next lowest is an association 20-point online package at $356 ($17.80 per point).

How much do BC Housing's own courses cost?

BC Housing's Learning on Demand catalogue is $90 per 2.5-point module, which is $36 per point. Eight Step Code modules for 20 points are $720.

Are association webinars worth more points?

No. A point is a point at renewal. Association webinars are informal CPD at 1 point per hour unless the association is one BC Housing names for formal credit, and even then the points are only worth more if the course is one you would take anyway.

Are these prices including tax?

No. All prices on this page are as published, before GST. Prices change; check the provider's current page before you buy.

Is cheaper CPD lower quality?

Price mostly reflects delivery cost, not content. A live webinar has a presenter's time and a fixed date built in; an on-demand course is produced once. What matters for your licence is that the content is relevant, the hours are real and the record is complete.
